Popular winner in the Helly Hansen – Global Ocean Race Photographic Award

The Helly Hansen – Global Ocean Race Photographic Award competition took place during the double-handed Class40 Normandy Channel Race in brutal conditions that made any attempts at video or stills photography an extra challenge. Despite the constant upwind sailing in strong breeze, many of the teams sent images into the race office with a panel of judges choosing a shot by Axel Strauss and Nicolas Boidevézi of Class40 Defi GDE – Tzu Hang as overall winner.

Conquest, The Race for Empire Begins

B1639

As with previous Kydd tales, this new book includes a technology item and the reader will learn the part ‘camels’ can play in raiding an enemy camp. The storm at sea will also introduce many readers to a type of storm peculiar to the Indian Ocean. There are the important highs and lows as the story unfolds and it seems that Renzi may at last be closing in on marriage and a new career as a novelist.

HMS Warrior 1860, Victoria’s Ironclad Deterrent

B1640

This is a fully revised edition of a book published originally in 1987 by Conway Maritime Press.

The author has a well-established reputation for the standard of his research and his presentation of those facts. The publisher has an equally well-established reputation for the very high standard of its historical naval publications. The joining of author and publisher therefore provides high expectations and these are not disappointed. The production of the book is first class and the standard of the lavish illustration is excellent.

Burning

Burning-551835main flex 946-710

Because of the absence of gravity, fuels burning in space behave very differently than they do on Earth. In this image, a 3-millimeter diameter droplet of heptane fuel burns in microgravity, producing soot. When a bright, uniform backlight is placed behind the droplet and flame and recorded by a video camera, the soot appears as a dark cloud. Image processing techniques can then quantify the soot concentration at each point in the image. On the International Space Station, the Flame Extinguishing Experiment examines the combustion of such liquid fuel droplets. This colorized gray-scale image is a composite of the individual video frames of the backlit fuel droplet. The bright yellow structure in the middle is the path of the droplet, which becomes smaller as it burns. Initial soot structures (in green) tend to form near the liquid fuel. These come together into larger and larger particles which ultimately spiral out of the flame zone in long, twisting streamers. Image Credit: NASA
