CGSC Annual Rendezvous
Fri – Sat. – May 3-5, 2013
The annual rendezvous is taking shape. It will be held the first weekend of May and will be moved to Boca Chita Key this year in Biscayne Bay National Park. This is due to Elliott Key being closed due to hurricane damage during Sandy.
Keep an eye out for more info as it develops, and join us in this great CGSC tradition. The theme is PEPPER POT – NICE AND HOT!
Tobasco Rendezvous There will be lots of fun for all ages with plenty of grilling, rum and Key West Ale. The raft up and anchorage will be at Sands Key, or in Boca Chita Harbor if you are lucky enough to get a spot on the seawall. We will be running a launch, so a dinghy is not necessary.
Cool Breezes and see you there!
Paul van Puffelen, Rear Commodore

Miami Key Largo Results
April 20, 2013
MLK 2013 2nd Place Congratulations to EVERYONE who came out to race in the Miami Key Largo Race last weekend. It was a steady beat into the wind that became very shifty, squally, and then dead, only to pick up again for a FAST push across the finish line, with 20 kts or more of breeze for some of us.
Unfortunately, a number of racers had to retire just before the finish line, as the time was running out for the 6pm deadline and they were stuck for too long in the dead air. So, they turned on their engines and came down to Key Largo to join the rest of us at the big party of the night at Gilbert’s Resort.
One special story was that the team of Los Gatos, Hunter 37, ARC2, had recently been sold by CGSC member, Dave Snyder to Stephen Michael (picture above), and while Steve was getting to know the boat and relearn his sailing skills with Dave instructing them, Dave talked up the Key Largo Race while his new boat is not ready yet. Steve decided to invite the regular Los Gatos crew to do the race on what is now, his boat. As this was their first race ever, we came in 2nd Place in ARC2! It was a thrill for them to come to the awards party and pick up the award that we, as a team made happen. We’re all invited back aboard next year to race in 2014. Steve will become a member of the CGSC after he returns from his summer working gigs. Get the MKL results here.
I know there are many other great stories out there. So glad to see everyone down in Key Largo. Hopefully more boats will be there next year. And don’t forget to sign up for the Miami Coastal Challenge, featured in the block below!

Sunday Fun Day Race
Sunday, May 12, 2013
Last race recap below.
The first edition of the new CGSC Sunday FUN Race can as usual best be described by Jimmy Buffet. “THE WEATHER IS HERE, WISH YOU WERE BEAUTIFUL”.
A perfect 12 knot sea breeze on a beautiful Sunday afternoon is exactly what was envisioned for this new monthly race which is open to all boats over 12 feet. Certainly this initial edition had a wide spectrum of boat types including Overall winner Jim Greene’s Bavarian 44 Bali Hai which just managed to nip out Jack King’s J-22 Hot Streak. Other class winners include Jorge Reinhold’s Flying Scott taking the Centerboard class and Dennis Jansma’s Stilleto 27 in the Performance Multihull class. Unfortunately there weren’t entries in the Cruising Cat and “Golf Handicap” classes.
But as always the best part of the day was the excuses and camaraderie at the post race “debriefing” as the racers “re-hydrated” upstairs. One important point was made during this discussion which is that every boat that participated would have welcomed more crew. Hopefully we will be able to get the word out that there is always room for anyone that wants a terrific ending to the weekend “just messing about in boats”.
Upcoming dates are May 12, June 16, July 21 and August 18.
