Nelson's Victory

The launch of HMS Victory

On 7 May 1765, HMS Victory was launched from Chatham Royal Dockyard. During her unusually long career, she saw action leading fleets in the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary War, and most famously, the Battle of Trafalgar.

Many books have been written about Victory but none like this from Brian Lavery, which tells the full story of the ship since she first took to the waters in May 1765. It contains many surprises – that she was almost wrecked on her launch; that diplomacy conducted onboard her played a crucial role in provoking Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812; and that in 1914 Kaiser Wilhelm set the First World War in motion at a desk made from her timbers.

The book also tells the story of Horatio Nelson – with whom she is so closely related – who was born a few weeks before his most famous ship was ordered, and whose career paralleled hers in many ways.

The sinking of the RMS Lusitania – 100 years on

One hundred years ago, on 7 May 1915, the RMS Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat. She sank 18 minutes later with the loss of 1,198 passengers and crew

The Lusitania entered service with Cunard in 1907. The first transatlantic express liner powered by marine turbines, she could complete the Liverpool-New York crossing in five days and had a top speed of 25 knots. She restored the British supremacy of the key North Atlantic route which the Germans had seized.

The Lusitania Story is the complete story of this most famous ocean liner. This book also takes a close look at the disaster which befell her and, with the help of leading experts, the authors examine the circumstances of her loss and try to determine why this magnificent vessel was lost in a mere 18 minutes.

VE Day - A Day to Remember
Was: £12.99

Victory in Europe – 70 Years On

On 7 May 1945, Germany’s unconditional surrender was signed in Reims by General Alfred Jodl. The following day, Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced the end of the war on the radio from the Cabinet Room and 8 May continues to be celebrated as Victory in Europe Day.

The new paperback edition of VE Day – A Day to Remember catches the mood of jubilation and exhilaration of the day yet also the great sadness of the huge waste of human life and resources. Hard times still lay ahead.

The authors have compiled a collection of memories and anecdotes from celebrities and members of the public covering their experiences of the Second World War and the day that Victory over the Nazis was declared. We hear from not only those in the Armed Forces but civilians.

Despatch Rider on the Western Front 1915–1918

Despatch Rider on the Western Front, 1915-1918 – The Diary of Sergeant Albert Simpkin MM is a skillfully abridged version of the diary of a First World War motorcycle despatch rider.

The diary entries, and some longer descriptions of the main actions of the Division, provide a fascinating record of the life of a despatch rider on the Western Front; one day dodging shell holes and ammunition limbers to take his despatches to the front, the next observing the quaint but often courageous lives of the local populace. Throughout the diary are colourful and amusing anecdotes about his fellow soldiers, and critical comments on the strategies and tactics employed by the officers.

Captain Kidd

Underwater explorers in Madagascar have found what they believe to be the treasure of notorious Scottish pirate William Kidd. The ‘treasure’ – a 50kg silver bar – is currently under armed guard on Sainte Marie island, but is believed to be from the wreckage of the pirate’s ship.

Captain William Kidd was executed on 23 May 1701. It is one of the most controversial and revealing episodes in the long history of piracy. The legend that has grown up around Kidd’s final voyage, his concealed treasure and the dubious conduct of his trial, has made him into one of the most intriguing and misunderstood figures from the golden age of piracy.

‘A comprehensive account of Kidd’s life at sea and the political skulduggery in Parliament that was ultimately to be his downfall. A very good book, easy to read’.
