Men of the Battle of Britain

Since it was first published in 1989, Men of the Battle of Britain has become a standard reference book for academics and researchers interested in the Battle of Britain. Copies are also owned by many with purely an armchair interest in the events of 1940. The 2015 third edition will include new names and corrected spellings, as well as many new photographs. Plenty of the entries have been extended with freshly acquired information.

The book records the service details of the airmen who took part in the Battle of Britain in considerable detail. Where known, postings and their dates are included, as well as promotions, decorations and successes claimed flying against the enemy. There is also much personal detail, often including dates and places of birth, civilian occupations, dates of death and place of burial or, for those with no known grave, place of commemoration

Australia’s Few and the Battle of Britain

As featured in Warfare Magazine (click the link to view a free article).

This is the story of eight Australian fighter pilots engaged in the Battle of Britain, the first major battle of the Second World War fought entirely in the air.

‘A story we take for granted, here told afresh with insight and empathy.’
Professor Peter Stanley, UNSW Canberra

‘In telling the stories of some of the Australians who flew in the Battle of Britain, Kristen Alexander has combined academic rigour with compelling personal detail. She has demonstrated that the “unknowns” of the Battle are as fascinating as those who gained celebrity status. This is a book for those who know much about what happened in 1940 and those who don’t.’
Geoff Simpson, Trustee, Battle of Britain Memorial Trust

Belgian Embassy book launch Belgian Embassy book launch

A special launch event was hosted by the Belgian Embassy on Tuesday in London, in honour of the recently published The Raid on Zeebrugge.

The book is the fruit of the chance discovery of a series of photographic plates belonging to Alfred Carpenter, who commanded the lead ship, HMS Vindictive, during the raid, which took place on 23 April 1918. Winston Churchill called the raid on Zeebrugge ‘the finest feat of arms of the Great War’. This brief, but bloody, action resulted in the highest number of Victoria Crosses ever awarded for a single action. Approximately 1,000 officers and men of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines stormed the most heavily defended U-Boat base in Occupied Europe.

Photographed are the authors – Carl Decaluwe (Governor of West Flanders) and Tomas Termote, who discovered the photograph collection – with First Sea Lord Admiral Sir George Zambellas. The authors presented the book and discussed plans for the raid’s centenary commemorations.

Gallipoli trilogy receives premier approval Gallipoli trilogy receives premier approval

Australia’s former Prime Minister John Howard gave his support to John Hamilton’s three Gallipoli books, Gallipoli Sniper, Fatal Charge at Gallipoli, and Gallipoli Victoria Cross Hero, during a recent meeting with the author in Melbourne. John Hamilton has also been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his contribution to print media.

‘To have had the privilege of working in this country and abroad as a journalist for nearly half a century has been a deeply rewarding and satisfying career,’ Mr Hamilton said. ‘I have been very fortunate in working with some great editors and being in the position to experience and record history. It’s also been a special privilege working closely with members of the veterans’ community and making a small contribution to their great legacy.’

At their recent meeting, John Howard was presented with a copy of each of John Hamilton’s best-selling Gallipoli trilogy, published by Frontline Books.
