Fight the Good Fight

Whilst a toxic mixture of nationalism and militarism tore Europe and the wider world apart from 1914 to 1919, there was one factor that united millions of people across all nations: that of a Christian faith.

This book brings together 23 individual and family case studies, some of well-known personalities including WW1 nurse Edith Cavell, others whose story has become neglected through the decades. Although divided by nation, social class, political outlook and denomination, they were united in their desire to “Fight the Good Fight”.

Author John Broom also runs a blog, FaithInWartime.Wordpress.com dedicated to the subject, and you can follow his updates on Twitter and Facebook.

Shortlisted for the Maritime Media Awards Mountbatten Literary Award 2015

T. E. Lawrence and the Red Sea Patrol by John Johnson Allen

T. E. Lawrence and the Red Sea Patrol has been shortlisted for the Maritime Media Awards Mountbatten Literary Award 2015. This Award is made to the person who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, is the author of the work of literature that contributes most significantly to public awareness of maritime issues.

Although many books have been written about T E Lawrence and the Arab Revolt, none before has fully explored the pivotal role of the Royal Navy in the Red Sea at the time. This is the first book to be written about the Navy’s role in the success of the Arab Revolt in the creation of the legendary figure of Lawrence of Arabia.

The winner will be announced on 12 November at the Institute of Directors, Pall Mall, London.

Nelson's Victory
Was: £30.00
Now: £24.00
Nelson’s Victory by Brian Lavery

Nelson’s Victory is also shortlisted for the Maritime Media Awards Mountbatten Literary Award 2015.

In HMS Victory‘s 250th year, Nelson’s Victory tells the full story of the ship since she first took to the waters in May 1765. The book also tells the story of Horatio Nelson, who was born a few weeks before his most famous ship was ordered, and whose career paralleled hers in many ways. It does not ignore the Battle of Trafalgar, but it says much more about the other lives of the ship, which at different times was a flagship, a fighting ship, a prison hospital ship, a training ship for officers and boys, a floating courtroom, a signal school in the early days of radio, tourist attraction and national icon.

“The maritime environment is undiminished in its significance to us. We must therefore ensure that our national understanding of it is enhanced. That is why the Maritime Media Awards are important in helping to counteract ‘sea blindness’.”
First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sir George Zambellas KCB DSC.
