Ginetta Confirm Changes To 2016 Championships
Ginetta today unveil their plans to make their quartet of single-make championships even more cost-effective for 2016, whilst bridging the gap between formulae.
Committed to bringing drivers into motorsport, and nurturing their development as racing drivers throughout their careers, Ginetta has implemented a number of changes to their series for 2016 across both the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and British GT support packages.
In order to control season costs, a testing restriction will be in place for both the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup and KICK Start Energy Drink Ginetta Junior Championship. After the Ginetta Media Day, competitors will only be able to test at championship venues during the official Ginetta pre-event test and the official Friday test before the event.
Ginetta Juniors will also be able to nominate one additional day at each venue. They will also see a further five races included on the 2015 calendar, with three races scheduled at Donnington Park, Croft, Knockhill, Rockingham and Silverstone. These will replace Juniors’ free practice on Saturday morning.
After the success of the split classes on the TOCA support bill, the GT5 Challenge will also introduce a PRO and AM format for 2017. This will be in addition to the GRDC+ subclass who race at Brands Hatch, Silverstone, Spa Francorchamps and Donnington Park.
In addition, the GT5 Challenge will see an updated qualifying format. The race one grid will be based on the qualifying result, race two on the results of race one and where three races are scheduled, the final starting order is to be determined by a reverse grid draw.
Two rounds of the GT5 Challenge will join the BTCC support bill, as the SuperCup sits out Thruxton (07/08 May) and Croft (18/19 June). As a result, the GT5 Challenge will drop the Rockingham (30 Apr/01 May) and Snetterton (06/07 Aug) British GT support slots, leaving the GRDC+ field to run solo around these smaller circuit configurations.
With the changes designed to further strengthen the Ginetta motorsport ladder, the 2016 prize packages are designed to encouraged progression through the formulae. For example, the winner of the Junior series will be loaned a Ginetta G55 GT4 car to be used in the 2017 Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup.
Similarly, the GRDC+ champion will receive an entry into the Ginetta GT5 Challenge for 2017, plus a test in a Ginetta G57 or Ginetta G55 GT4. Whilst the GT5 Challenge champion will receive £5,000 in Ginetta parts credit for 2017, plus a Ginetta G55 GT4 test.
