Honourable Warriors

Major Richard Streatfeild has been asked to comment on the military situation in Afghanistan by BBC News after UK military troops were deployed to the country’s Helmand province in response to Taliban threat.

Streatfeild spent seven months fighting the Taliban in the area in the town of Sangin in 2009 and 2010, and drew on the same experiences he used to write Honourable Warriors – A Front-Line Account of the British Army’s Battle for Helmand, which was released in paperback in November 2015, to comment on the recent developments.

Australia’s Few and the Battle of Britain

Congratulations to Kristen Alexander, whose 2015 book Australia’s Few and the Battle of Britain has been announced as the winner of the nonfiction category of the 2015 ACT Writing and Publishing Awards.

The ACT judges’ comments refer to the author’s ‘incomparable writing style and the high production value of the book’, as well as describing it as ‘very well-researched, well-documented, well-structured and well-written’. It looks at the role of the ’30 or so’ Australians who took part in the Battle of Britain through the lens of the lives of eight young fighter pilots. Each man’s story is brought to life using letters, diary entries, official correspondence, public records and family reminiscence.

The Railway

The Railway – British Track Since 1804 by the late Andrew Dow has been shortlisted for an award from the Railway and Canal History Society.

Never before has a comprehensive history been written of the track used by railways of all gauges, tramways, and cliff railways, in Great Britain. Andrew Dow’s account of the development of track, involving deep research in the papers of professional institutions as well as rare books, company records and personal accounts, paints a vivid picture of development from primitive beginnings to modernity. The book contains nearly 200 specially-commissioned drawings as well as many photographs of track in its very many forms since the appearance of the steam locomotive in 1804.

Author spotlight on: Michael Green
Many thanks to the War History Online website for this review of Michael Green’s two recent additions to the popular Images of War series:

‘Here are two very nice books in the Images of War range by Michael Green. The general histories and captions and the choice of images has been made with great care. Mr Green is stalwart of this series and I have come to admire his work. Many of the other books in this range could do with a slice more of the substance this author perennially includes in his offerings. The two on offer here go hand in glove and might have made one big book, but we can have no complaints if they are treated as a pair or not. I have no hesitation in recommending the pair.’
