MERRYN GLOVER

WRITING ON NATURE AT XPONORTH

Recent years have seen a renaissance of writing about the natural world, and during the pandemic nature writing offered us vicarious enchantment. This online event at Xponorth explores writing about nature and landscape through fiction and non-fiction.

Chaired by literary agent Jenny Brown and in conversation with poet and essayist Kathleen Jamie, join Merryn as she discusses her brand new novel Of Stone and Sky – a saga following several generations of a shepherding family, their land and way of life. It is a profound mystery, a passionate poem and a political manifesto, shot through with wisdom and humour.

CELEBRATING THE CENTENARY OF GEORGE MACKAY BROWN

NEW EDITIONS OF HIS WRITING

Kathleen Jamie is also the editor of one of our three new books published to mark the Centenary of Orkney writer George Mackay Brown in 2021. She introduces her selection of his poetry in Carve the Runes, while Malachy Tallack presents selected short stories in Simple Fire and Linden Bicket and Kirsteen McCue have edited the first new edition of An Orkney Tapestry since the 1970s.

These books explore the multi-faceted world of George Mackay Brown’s Orkney, the writer’s lifelong home and inspiration. George Mackay Brown’s concerns were the ancestral world, the communalities of work, the fables and religious stories which he saw as underpinning mortal lives.
