Lightnings to Spitfires – Memoirs of an RAF Fighter Pilot and Former Officer Commanding the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight by Squadron Leader Clive Rowley MBE.

For forty-four years, Clive Rowley served with the Royal Air Force and for thirty-one of those years he specialised as an air defence fighter pilot. Such was his love of fast, highly manoeuvrable fighter aircraft that, in order to stay flying, he opted to retain his Specialist Aircrew status – even though it meant that he had to relinquish any further chance of promotion above his rank of squadron leader. During those years Clive Rowley flew Lightnings, Hawks and Tornado F.3s but, perhaps more intriguingly, Hurricanes and Spitfires. The reason for this is that he became both the Officer Commanding and Flight Leader of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). For eleven years, Clive Rowley flew alongside the Lancaster as part of one of the RAF’s, if not the world’s, most famous aerial formations. Many readers will, unknowingly, have watched him fly past at air shows, large-scale celebrations and commemorations around the UK and across Europe, including combined displays with the Red Arrows. While packed with humorous and often hair-raising anecdotes, as one might expect, this book is a highly detailed account of life as a fighter pilot in the RAF in the last three decades of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first.
