Along with the rest of the UK, we at Pen & Sword Books have been captivated by the awe-inspiring efforts of Captain Tom Moore in fundraising for our beloved NHS over the past few weeks, as he approached his 100th birthday. As part of today’s celebrations, he was made an honorary colonel and enjoyed an RAF flypast over his Bedfordshire home.

Having a special interest in military history, we looked at Captain Tom’s service record and discovered that he joined the Army early in the Second World War. He served with the 8th Battalion The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (8DWR) and was selected for officer training in 1940 and rose to the rank of captain, later being posted to 9 DWR in India. He served and fought in the Arakan in western Burma, later renamed Rakhine State, and went with his regiment to Sumatra after the Japanese surrender in 1945.

Recommended reading: Fighting with the Fourteenth Army in Burma – Original War Summaries of the Battle Against Japan 1943-1945 by James Luto.

Presented here together for the first time is the story of war against the Japanese as told by each of the divisions that fought in that bitter conflict the original and authentic accounts untouched by the pens of historians. The Fighting Divisions of the Fourteenth Army is completed with citations for those actions which saw the award of the Victoria Cross and detailed Orders of Battle throughout the Fourteenth Army’s existence to make this the most detailed study of its kind.

Pen & Sword will donate 50 per cent of profits on all Kindle and ePub sales of this book to Captain Tom Moore’s Just Giving fund until end of May 2020.
